2. Using the handout on motivic development, find examples in the score (if they exist) of the following devices (you may not find some of them in this movement).

3. Write down the keys used for the whole 1st movement. (clue: look at cadences). Where is the FOP (far out point)? What is the significance of the second theme key in the recapitulation?

4. Which themes are developed, and what devices are used in the development section?

5. What are three unusual features of the recapitulation?

6. How does Beethoven use contrast of registers and tone colour for dramatic effect in this movement? Find and (briefly) describe two sections that demonstrate this.

7. Other instruments are introduced in the last movement. What are they? Compare the orchestra for this symphony to a standard Classical period orchestra - what are the differences?

8. Research the rest of the symphony. What is significant about the keys of the other movements? Where does the original theme reappear in other movements?

8. Short essay question (3-4 paragraphs): Beethoven's music exemplifies characteristics of both the Classical and Romantic periods. Discuss, with reference to the first movement of Beethoven's 5th symphony.
